Huzzah!

Ladies and gentlemen I have officially finished the first huge chunk of my project for my fellowship!! It has been a long 10 weeks, very long. There were whole days when I would never even leave my apartment (the glamorous freelance life) or have any human contact at all. But it’s done and I’m so happyyyy.

The finished project is somewhere between a comic and a graphic novel (it’s about 50 pages so a long comic or a short graphic novel I supposed) but I will be posting it chapter by chapter on my website over the next 7 weeks (1 chapter per week). Now starts the journey of turning it into an animation which is going to be quite the experience but with everything already drawn and written it’s not so bad. I’ve gone through the planning phases of so many different projects and ideas and now that this has been completed a weight has been lifted.

My project is called How to Win a Race War and for now will only be featured online but I may offer print copies of it at some point (we shall see). To read it simply go to the tab that says “How to Win a Race War” and click “Chapter 1”. Really excited to finally put this out into the world, let me know what you think!

In the meantime, I’ll just be over here figuring life out or whatever it is 21 year olds do.tumblr_inline_orb83x4cU71tyih9i_540.gif

A Micro Post

I got the results of my DNA test a little bit ago and it was so fascinating (I highly recommend this to everyone, it’s just such a cool experience)! I’m a visual thinker/processor so naturally I had to draw myself in the traditional outfits of all the places I come from. We are all much more connected then we think we are. 👐🏾

What’s New

I’ve been super busy lately! I’ve been working on a new photo series called Warrior (Self Portrait 2017) and I’m really happy with it so far. I’m very interested in exploring the phenomenon that is black women and what better place to start than with myself? I’m working on a lot of projects right now, 2 animations, this photo series, and a printmaking project, all revoling around this idea of race and identity. I can only show this one picture for now (and honestly it could still change quite a bit) but stay tuned for much more to come!!

New Year (Almost), New Blog!

I’m not sure if other people do this (maybe you do) but I like background noise when I work. “Work” can mean a whole myriad of things from personal projects like Liz at Large cartoons and animations, paid commissions, doodles, anything art related. Anyway, when I work I like to watch TV (the millennial version of TV so I mean Netflix or HBO GO). When I’m really into what I’m doing, like really into it, all time stops. Maybe it’s been 15 minutes, maybe it’s been 15 hours, who knows. This TV habit of mine has allowed me to create a new measurement of time: Number of Seasons. So since September, not even the real beginning of last year because I can’t remember that far back but just September, I’ve watched the full series, yes the entire 9 seasons, of “The Office”, the full series of “Game of Thrones” (6 seasons), the full series of “Parks and Recreation” (7 seasons), 1 season of “The Crown”, 2 seasons of “Sherlock”, 1 season of “Stranger Things”, 1 season of “Troll Hunters”, 1 season of “Jane the Virgin”, 1 season of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”, and the first half of season 1 of “The Walking Dead”. What’s even more startling is that I watch more movies than I do TV shows.

This has been my most creative year yet, I made 339 digital illustrations since last December. Just digital illustrations, that’s not including paintings (I was in a 2 hour twice a week painting studio class this semester), paper sketches or drawings, animations, or printmaking things. And for the first time in my college career I got all A’s this semester (loud applause).

On a big level 2016 was total crap, on a small Liz sized level, 2016 was pretty good. I mean I spent the summer in France for goodness sake, 2016 was a great year the second I landed in Paris. I love the idea of a fresh start and clean slate that the new year brings. It would be such a bummer to have a rotten moldy start and a dirty slate right when things are kickin off. At that point it’s like why bother you’ve already stumbled at the start just sit this one out, keep the bench warm this round. But that’s not how it works, you have the start or the stumble you want to have and coach is gonna put you in whether you like it or not so might as well start with a smile. Here’s to another year of playing the game 🥂🍺🍻🍹🍸🍷🍾(guess who just turned 21 holla atcha gurl)
